2. FAQs:

General

2.1 What are the parental responsibilities?

Parents are requested to ensure that their child attends on a regular basis all practices and games.

A few times a season, parents are requested to volunteer their time in running a canteen at games or tournaments. They may also be asked to make a contribution to the canteen in the way of baked goods, drinks, hot dogs, etc.

The money raised from the canteen goes directly back into the individual team account to help defray costs associated with running the team.

Parents may also be asked to keep score or time games their child is playing in.

Parents are also called on to assist in driving to ‘away’ games. The club is always looking for volunteers to help with other duties and functions of the club. Please contact your team manager or the club president.

2.2 What equipment is needed?

For competitive play, each player requires a pair of proper basketball shoes and their own basketball. Basketball shoes should only be used indoors and never outside; cost can run anywhere from $75.00 and up. Basketballs may be purchased through ORBA for $30. For recreational basketball, while it isn’t absolutely necessary to have basketball specific shoes, it is still best to use shoes that are reserved for indoor use. Each recreational player also requires their own basketball, which may be purchased through ORBA for $10.

2.3 Are any of the clubs members paid?

The association has a part time paid staff person and expenses and honoraria are paid for some coaches. All other members of the club volunteer their time whether as a member of the board administration or team (e.g. coach, manager, etc). Most club members are parents who have children registered with ORBA.

Competitive Leagues

2.4 How important is winning?

While winning provides great satisfaction for a player, team and coach the most important attitudes stressed within Bedrock are good sportsmanship, team spirit, and respect. Bedrock is a member of the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) and requires that all parents, coaches, and players model mature behaviour which:

2.5 Is regular attendance required at practices and games?

Yes. In order to improve and bond as a team, players need to attend regularly. In the case of illness, a player is excused. However the coach should be informed prior to the practice or game of a known absence. In the case of injury, the player is usually required to attend both practices and games in order to keep up with new plays, etc. At the coach’s discretion, those who have been absent from practices before games may not be permitted to play in a game until such time as they are able to resume practices.

2.6 When and where are practices and games?

Most competitive league home tournament games are played at St Mark HS in Manotick. Practices may take place at various gym locations within the local area. Gym times are assigned to competitive teams allowing for age (e.g. earlier time slots) and level (e.g. Juvenile and Midget-age teams require a larger playing area). Currently, school gyms used by the club are located at St. Mark HS (Manotick), Castor Valley ES (Greely), Rideau Valley MS ( Kars), Osgoode Township HS (Metcalfe), St.Jerome (Riverside South), Steve McLean (Riverside South), Mother Teresa (Barhaven) and St.Joseph's (Barhaven)

2.7 How long is the season?

Tryouts for competitive teams are held late-September to mid October, depending on the age level of the team (i.e. Juvenile, Midget, Bantam, Atom, and Novice). Teams are formed by early-mid October with practices being two times a week (possible exception is Novice). The season ends after the Provincial Playoffs or tournaments that take place in late March, April May, or June, depending on the level. Younger-aged teams end their season earlier, whereas the upper levels end later in the year.

2.8 How many players make up a competitive team?

The maximum number of players at Juvenile, Midget and Bantam levels is 11. The maximum number of players at Novice and Atom levels is 12. Bedrock follows the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) policy with regard to minimum number of players on a team.

2.9 Are there tryouts for competitive play and how does that work?

Yes. Your child may tryout for a competitive team if they meet the age and gender requirement. Registration is mandatory prior to the tryouts. Registration is $275.00  and provides the club with important information regarding the child’s playing experience, height, weight, age, and any health concerns. The parent/guardian MUST sign the waiver as part of the registration this  allows your child to be insured by the club. While the team coach ultimately determines the team roster based on position availability, player-skill and other criteria, tryouts will be conducted with an objective coach present who will provide input to cuts and final player selection.

If your child is offered a spot on a competitive team, you must make your decision known upon being contacted by the coach. If your child did not make the cut, you may opt to be a part of the recreational program. If you do not choose this option your registration fee will be refunded (less the $25 non-refundable administration fee).

2.10 What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee covers the cost of

NOTE: Other tournaments are extra and will be decided upon by each individual coach/team

2.11 What costs are not covered?

Referees: A qualified referee ensures fair play and the safety of all players on the court. A minimum of two referees is needed per game. Each referee is paid at least $35 per game. A tournament usually consists of 3 – 4 games. The "host" team is responsible for carrying the referee costs. Two hosted tournaments are the minimum number you can expect during a season. The referee fees are either paid directly out-of-pocket by parents (i.e. divide costs by number of players on the team) or through proceeds from team canteens (supplied and operated by parents) at hosted games. (NOTE: At sanctioned tournaments, referee fees can be covered by charging a tournament-participation fee.)

Ontario Basketball Association Fee:  Every competitive player is registered with the OBA which gives them coupons and membership card.  There is a $15.00 cost per player.

2.12 How many trips are made out of town and what are the costs associated with them?

Each competitive team usually participates in approximately 1 to 4 "away" tournaments. The player-costs associated with these are transportation, hotel, and food. These costs are absorbed entirely by individuals on the team and vary with the location of the tournament, type of accommodation/transportation secured and meals required which could typically range in the $150.00-$200.00 range per player per tournament over the course of the season.

2.13 Do I have to buy a uniform?

No. The club supplies use of a uniform. A uniform/equipment deposit of $100.00 (post-dated to June 1 and made payable to ORBA) will be requested by your team coach at the beginning of the season. The cheque will be returned to you upon receipt of the equipment and laundered uniform (by June 30).

Players are encouraged to purchase a shooting shirt (with player’s last name on the back). They also have the option of purchasing warm-up pants and a Bedrock "hoodie" sweatshirt.
